Shake Your Boogie

Finally!!!

I heard this jazzy, dancey little tune late one night on Nocturna and before it was over, I was checking out “Now Playing” to find out who had made this enchanting bit of music. It was Mocean Worker and it was “Shake Yor Boogie” and the album wasn’t out until the end of June. So, today.

Now go and listen to the song and I dare you not to get it stuck in your head.

Fabulousness

I’m a big fan of the swing music from way back, so it will surprise absolutely no one that I’m a big fan of The Puppini Sisters “Betcha Bottom Dollar”.

NPR (that hidden bastion of hippness) is all over them, here and KCRW made I Will Survive one of Today’s Top Tunes and I was busy hitting repeat on my iPod while heading out to pick up the entire album. I’ve given it as gifts to three different people. Hooray for happy summertime music.

No, No, No

The buzz on Amy Winehouse hit before actually I’d seen or heard anything from her.

Great voice, soul, catchy, retro.

These are words gueranteed to catch my attention and then I began to hear what a train wreck of a person she was, which sort of soured me, still, mind you, without actually hearing her and then “Rehab” became this hit and by the time I finally heard it as background in some coffeeshop somewhere, I was predisposed to disinterest.

Meh. Another overhyped Brit.

But then a friend threw the Jay-Z remix on a playlist for me and it caught. I got some free iTunes songs when I bought Hollywood Bowl tickets (which is still SO not enough to make things straight between us, Ticketmaster!!!) and so I got the original version (’cause, free! didn’t count!).

Which was great. And so were the next three songs that I heard, so, now, well, Viva Amy!!! Get down with your bad self.

to listen

This is Sybarite, which sounds similiar, to and in fact, collaborates with, Psapp, and if neither of those mean anything to you, let me add that Psapp did the Grey’s Anatomy theme song, Cozy in the Rocket, so if you’ve ever wanted to listen to it over and over or to hear variations on the theme, you’ll probably like either one of these bands.

Ziriguiboom!

I picked this up at random when Tower was going out of business - CD’s were .99, I picked up a lot of stuff. This was a really great random pick. I was already a Bebel Gilberto fan, but the whole CD was tailor made for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

you make me wanna

I was at the post office and there was this display rack of red postcards advertising lala - trade your CD’s for a dollar! and I thought - huh. I’d like like to trade CD’s for a dollar and so I went home and looked up lala.com and now 35 people have CD’s that I didn’t want anymore and I have 35 CD’s that I do want. And they gave me a cute t-shirt for pimping out their service to my friends. It’s like … recycling! and addictive. and I wish that the mailman would deliver on Sundays.

Fun for the whole family

Love, love, love John Waters; the movies, the music, the man. This album made my Christmas last year. Too many years of retail burned all the holiday love from my soul for a very long time and I tend to avoid shopping anytime after Thanksgiving, not because of the crowds, but because I find the music so unbearable. This album, however, has given me a new lease on holiday life. Very entertaining, as is the interview that he does about it for Fresh Air.

Fresh Air from WHYY, December 14, 2004 · Director John Waters, known for making art from sleaze, has a new CD for the season, A John Waters Christmas. It includes such songs as “Here Comes Fatty Claus,” “Little Mary Christmas,” and “Santa Claus is a Black Man.” Waters was once crowned the “Pope of Trash” by William Burroughs.

Waters’ 1988 film Hairspray was made into a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. In addition, Waters started photographing video stills off his television screen that became the raw material for his artwork. Many of the images are collected in his recent book, John Waters: Change of Life.
